Afrocentric

This following piece I did was a take on me finding my style and test on color.I went to give off the classic afrocentric vibe with this piece by doing a black girl with two puffs and and small tribal designs on the face. You see other small faces around the painting resembling the tears once shed by ancestors. The colors blue and green are in the back to resemble unity. I chose earth tons for that reasoning.

  9. The white of the tribal designs really makes them pop from the girls face and the texture of her hair is nicely done. The different weights of lines used really distinguishes this painting too.

  11. I like what you are working on and exploring. I think it is still in the beginning phases. Don't limit yourself to opaque paint layers. If some of the work was transparent or if you included collage I feel the work would not be so heavy visually. I like the references to tribal African imagery and think you should do more research on this. Look at tribal masks, African masks and fabric patterns Adinkra or Kente cloth. Some artists you could look at who may influence your work are Mickalene Thomas, Fahamu Pecou, Kevin Cole, Ronald Lockett, and Romare Bearden.
